Fed: ALP s turn to stumble on tax detail

CANBERRA, Jan 20 AAP - After a week of stumbles over the GST, the government was today
pointing the finger back at its chief accuser, opposition treasury spokesman Simon Crean,
after he tripped up on the existing wholesale sales tax (WST) system.

Mr Crean defended the WST by declaring that while its rates were higher than the 10
per cent GST, it only applied to luxury items.

"The wholesale sales tax was off the necessities of life," he told 2GB's Stan Zemanek.

"It didn't apply to food."
