WA: Hood-wearing speeding cops set to be sacked over stunt

West Australian Police Commissioner BARRY MATTHEWS says he has no choice but to sack
two officers who drove past a speed camera at more than 120 kilometres an hour while wearing
Ku Klux Klan-style hoods.

Mr MATTHEWS has recommended to the state's police minister that the two officers, from
the south-west city of Bunbury, be removed from the service over the prank in August 2001.

And he says although he accepts there was no racist element to their actions, the deception
during the incident and in failing to admit their complicity for more than two years means
they should be sacked.

The officers were on duty when they donned white hoods, obscured the licence plate
of their unmarked police car and drove past a speed camera at 126kph in a 60 zone.

The officers are both permitted to appeal the commissioner's recommendation.
